Team Slaley Wines

SlaleyIn celebration of National Woman’s Day, the only all woman yachting team will be flying the Slaley colours in the Eden Island Lipton Cup from 21 to 28 August 2009.

2009 is the third year that the Women’s Team, run by Kirsten Veenstra and Judy Provoyeur, will compete against the men in Lipton, and hopefully give them a run for their money. Prior to that, there had not been a Women’s Team in Lipton for seven years.

The Slaley Women’s Lipton Team is managed by well-known boat builder and sailor Manuel Mendes and sails for the Cape Radio Yacht Club.

Team Macnificent Hitachi

Once again, the youngest crew to participate in this year’s Lipton Cup. Joshua Banks, Jacques Louw, Alessandro Napoli, Ryan Barnardo, Jason Gray, Daniel Spratley and Robert Wood are all from the Milnerton Aquatic Club in Cape Town, where they sail either Optimist or Dabchicks. Their combined average age is just under 13 years old. All have only been sailing since December 2007, after attending a beginners’ sailing course at the club.

This is the second year this team will be entering the event under the experienced guidance of Brent Gray, who is the on-board mentor and coach, and Axel Adelbert who is the team manager. This will be the last year the MAC Lipton Boys will have Brent on board – in 2010 they will be entirely on their own in their endeavour, as they challenge for the cup.

The boys have proved they are talented, tenacious and very competitive, and there is no doubt that much will still be heard from this young crew in the years to come.
