Giovannini & Progli snatch Lipton Cup!

“YOUNG BUCKS” TRIUMPH! In a nail biting charge to the finish line, Andrea Giovannini & Markus Progli, sailing Team Intasure Marine Insurance for False Bay Yacht Club crossed the line three boats ahead of, Defending Champion, Greg Davis, sailing Colorpress for Knysna Yacht Club. To win today, they needed to make sure that they finished with two boats between themselves and Davis and for the majority of the race, they were just ahead of Davis, but in the second to last leg, they made a huge push and rounded the bottom mark with three boats between themselves and Davis. On the final beat to windward, and the finish line, Davis managed to claw back one position, but it was just not enough. Andrea Giovannini & co-skipper, Markus Progli crossed the line with the required two boat buffer to become the new Lipton Cup Champions.

By Matthew Thomas With the last race scheduled to start at 11:30 am today, two teams are still fighting for the Lipton Cup. As with all events like this, it’s always a matter of consistency and it’s no surprise that the most consistent boats are going to have to fight it out today, Both teams, Andrea Giovannini & Markus Progli, sailing False Bay Yacht Club’s Team Intasure Marine Insurance and Greg Davis, sailing Knysna Yacht Club’s Colorpress, have a single win in the regatta and are now separated by a mere 3 points. It will be up to Andrea & Markus to ensure that they stay well ahead of Greg and finish at least 3 boats ahead.

Experience wins over youth
By Matthew Thomas With very light winds across the race course this morning, the Race Committee made the decision to postpone the start and wait to see if the wind filled in. At around 1 pm, the wind started to fill in and the course was laid, this time a “sausage” shaped course (windward/leeward) of 12 miles. The race was started at around 2 pm and with many boats across early, coupled with a big wind shift, the Race Officer, Doug Alison declared a General Recall and the yachts returned to the starting area to restart. This start was very tight, in very light conditions, and the fleet immediately split into two groups. One going towards the land and the other out into the bay.

Extraordinary sailing and unique results

By Mathew Thomas For the first time in Lipton Cup history, we are going into day 5 with the top three boats separated by only one point in the race for the win and the race for 4th place has the next four boats neck and neck with three boats tied on 23 points and the next boat with 25 points. Asking around, no one can remember there being three boats in the running for 1st place, let alone an epic battle for 4th!

Win for Eastern Cape Sailors
Eastern Cape sailors, Rob Archibald & Andrew Ward win on Day 4 of The Lipton Cup Challenge With the weather settled after yesterday’s torrential rains, racing was started promptly at 11:30 am in Mossel Bay, but the fleet was called back after the wind shifted significantly on the first leg to windward. This shift meant that the day’s course needed to be reset to ensure that the windward mark was directly to windward of the start and once this was done, the yachts started racing again.
